Kerala: Two teachers booked over suicide of class 7 student

February 26, 2024

A case has been filed against two teachers from a government-aided school in connection with the suicide of a seventh-grade student in this coastal district. The student was discovered hanging in his home recently.

According to the family of the victim, the boy took this extreme step on the evening of February 15 at home, alleging that he had faced physical and mental abuse from certain teachers at the school. The teachers have been charged under IPC Section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt) and Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act, which is a non-bailable offense.

The parents’ complaint states that their son was beaten with a cane in front of other students. “The parents also claimed that he took the extreme step due to the physical and mental harassment by the teachers,” stated a police officer on Monday. An investigation has been initiated, and further action will be taken based on its findings, he added.

The accused teachers’ details were not disclosed by the officer. The case was registered a week after the school witnessed a significant protest following the student’s suicide. On February 19, activists from the Students Federation of India (SFI), the students’ wing of the ruling CPI (M), marched to the school, urging the management to take action against the accused teachers.

Relatives have asserted that 13-year-old Prajith, a resident of Kattoor, appeared distressed when he returned home from school on February 15. Subsequently, he was discovered hanging in his room by his brother.
