As per the police report, a group of senior and former students from the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital reportedly forcibly entered a hostel occupied by junior students during the early hours of Wednesday. They were carrying wooden clubs and hacksaws and allegedly threatened the junior students for attending a recent event, specifically the felicitation of the new principal.
Approximately 9 to 10 seniors and former students broke into the boys’ hostel located in Maniktala at around 3 am, and they demanded explanations from the juniors regarding their presence at the principal’s felicitation ceremony held on the preceding Tuesday. The group departed from the hostel before sunrise, according to an account from one of the junior students. A formal complaint was submitted by the hostel residents to the Amherst Street police station.
While investigators visited the hostel, no arrests have been made thus far. Hostel superintendent Swapan Mondal stated, “I have been informed that some individuals entered the hostel and confronted the junior students. I will take measures to ensure that no one can enter the hostel after 11 pm.” This incident occurred approximately a month after the tragic death of an undergraduate student at Jadavpur University, which was allegedly linked to ragging. Thirteen individuals were arrested in connection with the incident that transpired on August 9.
