Five people, including a father and his 10-year-old daughter, were killed in separate landslides across Himachal Pradesh over the past 24 hours as torrential rains battered the state, officials confirmed on Monday.
Educational institutions will remain closed on Tuesday in nine districts — Shimla, Kangra, Sirmaur, Una, Bilaspur, Chamba, Hamirpur, Solan, and Lahaul-Spiti — as well as in Banjar, Kullu and Manali subdivisions, following a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall.
Shimla, which recorded 122.8 mm of rain since Sunday evening, was the worst affected. Six trains on the Kalka–Shimla line were cancelled, while 1,281 roads, including four national highways, were blocked. Power supply to 3,207 transformers and 790 water schemes was also disrupted.
Among the casualties were Virender Kumar and his daughter, killed in Junga near Shimla when their house collapsed. In separate incidents, an elderly woman died in Kotkhai, a 23-year-old woman was buried in Jubbal, and 37-year-old Sheela Devi was killed in Sirmaur along with eight cattle when her home gave way during a landslip.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu informed the assembly that four more bodies had been recovered from Kugti in Chamba district during the ongoing Manimahesh Yatra pilgrimage, raising the death toll in the yatra since 15 August to 16. Of 15,000 stranded pilgrims, 10,000 have been evacuated.
The Meteorological Department has issued warnings of further heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in six districts on Tuesday. Continuous downpours have caused flooding in several rivers, landslips in multiple districts, road blockages, tree falls, and water supply disruptions across the hill state.
Since the onset of the monsoon on 20 June, Himachal Pradesh has recorded 95 flash floods, 45 cloudbursts and 115 major landslides, with 326 rain-related deaths and estimated losses of over ₹3,158 crore, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre.
