Leading the transformation of Indian K-12 education

Saurabh Modi– Saurabh Modi, Founder-Chairman, Neerja Modi School, Jaipur

National development hinges on the quality of education accessible to its citizens. Education is even more crucial for a country like India which is home to the largest youth population in the world. Indians have already started leading some of the most respected multinational companies such as Google, Microsoft, Twitter, PepsiCo, etc. Most of these organisations thrive on education and shaping consumer behavior and trends globally. This means that our institutions will have to step up to prepare students for the fast-transforming global landscape of work and life itself.

Established in 2001, Neerja Modi School, Jaipur (Rajasthan) was founded with the vision of empowering students to become “continuous learners”. The school’s pedagogy is designed to help them explore their hidden talents, nurture their innate talents and develop their leadership and cognitive skills. In view of the fact that what students learn in the school today may not be entirely relevant a decade later, the school emphasises on “Concept over Content”. Emerging technologies such as Deep Learning, AI, and Applied Technology are being widely applied in several sectors including communication and retail. Likewise, Blockchain technology is widely used in manufacturing, finance, and automobility. The transformation driven by technological advancements and innovation is unfathomable and will be led by the next generation of global citizens.

NMS has carved a niche for itself in India’s K-12 education map and has been leading the curve with its experiential learning approach. The school leaves no stone unturned to ensure that every child who joins the school at kindergarten, typically at the age of 4, is given ample opportunities to fulfill his/her true potential. Our passionate teachers are invested in the holistic growth and development of the students and committed to their excellence. NMS is unparalleled when it comes to the depth of exposure it provides to its students. The school has hosted stalwarts from diverse fields such as arts, sports, and academia and regularly invites industry experts and international teachers to guide the children.

NMS is nationally reputed  for its academic rigour and excellent sports and co-curricular education. Our students routinely top the board exams across the CBSE, IGCSE, and IB boards and have emerged as world champions in innovative technologies. Over the years, our students have won laurels in several sports and co-curricular events including athletics, academic Olympiads, science research programmes, national chess championship, extensive debates, and start-up competitions. Sports, visual and performing arts, as well as yoga are an integral part of a student’s life at NMS. Students get to interact with individuals from different walks of life and economic backgrounds, keeping them grounded, aware, and sensitive towards social and environmental issues.

The selfless conviction to give back and make a meaningful impact on the wider community is ingrained into the DNA of our students. They diligently engage in our community service initiatives and collaborate with several local NGOs, healthcare centres, and government schools. NMS promotes holistic student development by nurturing their critical thinking and leadership skills and by inculcating in them a passion for continuous learning.

The effectiveness of “the holistic learning approach” conceptualised by NMS in 2001, is closely aligned with the principles and  approach of the National Education Policy (NEP 2020). NEP states that “Pedagogy must evolve to make education more experiential, holistic, integrated, inquiry-driven, discovery-oriented, learner-centered, discussion-based, flexible, and, of course, enjoyable. The curriculum must include basic arts, crafts, humanities, games, sports and fitness, languages, literature, culture, and values, in addition to science and mathematics, to develop all aspects and capabilities of learners; and make education more well-rounded, useful, and fulfilling to the learner. Education must build character, enable learners to be ethical, rational, compassionate, and caring, while at the same time prepare them for gainful, fulfilling employment. The gap between the current state of learning outcomes and what is required must be bridged through undertaking major reforms that bring the highest quality, equity, and integrity into the system, from early childhood care and education through higher education.”

With its holistic approach and progressive culture, Neerja Modi School continues to remain resolutely focused on nurturing future global citizens.
