Legislation to regulate admission process of deemed varsities

Government will bring in a legislation to regulate administration and admission processes of deemed universities and private unaided institutions, Karnataka Medical Education minister Sharan Prakash Patil told the Legislative Assembly on July 22.
The state government, earlier, had made an attempt to bring in a law but was opposed by the students who feared an increase in fee structure.

Intervening, Congress MLA and former speaker Ramesh Kumar asked the minister whether a law could be brought in the aftermath of Karnataka High Court declaring as “unconstitutional and invalid” the University Grants Commission (Institutions Deemed to be Universities) Regulation 2010 pertaining to governance system, admission and fee structure and opening of campuses of deemed-to-be universities in the country.

In reply, Patil said, “It is possible to bring the legislation.”

The High Court had delivered the verdict in favour of the deemed universities, which challenged the unconstitutionality and legality of the regulation.

The universities had contended that the regulation interfered with the administration and admission processes of private unaided institutions in gross violation of a series of dicta of the Supreme Court.
