Five students have left school, and no teachers have resigned due to violence in Manipur over the past year, the Ministry of Education informed the Lok Sabha on Monday.
Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary provided this information in response to a written question from TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee.
“According to the state government of Manipur, five students have dropped out of school, and no teachers have resigned due to violence in the state since 2023,” the MoS stated.
Since May last year, ethnic violence between the Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and the hill-based Kuki-Zo groups has resulted in over 200 deaths and thousands being displaced from their homes.
Chaudhary further noted that the central and state governments are working together to restore normalcy and ensure the safety and education of all students. Various measures are being implemented to support affected students, including counseling services, financial aid, and community outreach programs. The government remains committed to providing a stable and secure educational environment for all children in Manipur, despite the ongoing challenges.
In addition to the efforts in education, relief camps have been set up to provide shelter and basic necessities to those displaced by the violence. Security forces have been deployed to maintain peace and prevent further clashes. The government is also engaging with community leaders from both groups to foster dialogue and reconciliation.
The Ministry of Education assured that it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to take necessary steps to support the students and teachers impacted by the violence.
