Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, when many universities are promoting students without any examination, the Medical Council of India (MCI) issued an advisory stating that no batch must be allowed to move to the next level of MBBS course without appearing for the exams.
MCI has requested all the medical colleges and universities to conduct exams before promoting students. The council further added that the final year students of various MBBS colleges can join internships once they pass their exams.
The colleges must will have to complete the MBBS course first that includes practicals, labs, demonstrations within two months of reopening of the colleges. Once permitted by the government, the colleges can conduct the MBBS exams in a month. The advisory said, “Regarding the conduct of 2nd/3rd (Part 1) and Final year MBBS examination for 2020, the time required for completion of the course would depend on the timing of the re-opening of the medical colleges.” Besides, the remaining supplementary exams should be completed as soon as possible.
Earlier, students of medical colleges appealed to authorities for general promotion due to the pandemic. Medical students are relatively “more prone to being infected” as they work in labs, hospital and college buildings. Conducting exams can lead to creation of multiple corona hot spots that can get difficult to contain.
Appealing to the government and medical authorities, one of the many medical students said on Twitter, “Govt has promoted all 1st year students even of technical institutions, I think they forgotten that there are MBBS students also ..I want to remind them that we are also there sir, please promote us also!
