Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), the student body in Mizoram, brought an end to their protest on Thursday night after receiving assurances from the state government regarding the disbursement of scholarships. Earlier in the day, officials elucidated that the delay was attributed to the model code of conduct in place for the state assembly polls held on November 7, awaiting approval from the Election Commission.
The protest, spearheaded by hundreds of students under the aegis of MZP, revolved around the alleged negligence of the state scholarship board in releasing the second installment of scholarship funds. Following a meeting with Chief Minister Zoramthanga, who directed the timely release of funds, the agitation was called off as the Election Commission sanctioned the petition for disbursement.
The students had previously staged a sit-in outside the Mizoram Scholarship Board office, obstructing officials from entering. The agitation encompassed demands for the immediate release of scholarship funds to 19,495 students, including those studying outside the state. Over Rs 17.87 crore allocated for the second installment was received by the state government in September.
The counting of votes for the state assembly polls is scheduled for December 3.
