MKCG Medical College suspends five students from hostel for ‘ragging’ juniors

12 students involved in ragging expelled from college in Odisha

The state-run MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Ganjam district, Odisha, has suspended five fourth-year MBBS students from the hostel for six months for allegedly ragging juniors. This decision follows recommendations from the anti-ragging committee, according to the college dean, Suchitra Dash.

The action was prompted by a written complaint from a second-year MBBS student, who reported experiencing physical and mental trauma due to the ragging. Additionally, three similar complaints were filed with the National Medical Council (NMC) by parents of junior students in the hostel. In response, the NMC directed the college to investigate and take appropriate action.

Initially, the anti-ragging committee found no evidence of ragging during their inquiry. However, after receiving another written complaint from a second-year student on Monday, they reopened the investigation, leading to the suspension.

Dean Dash emphasized the college’s zero-tolerance policy toward ragging, stating that those involved would be barred from the hostel for six months.

Baidyanathpur police have also received a complaint against the senior students involved in the incident. SP Sarvan Vivek M, a member of the anti-ragging committee, confirmed that an inquiry is underway and necessary legal actions will be taken.

Earlier this year, the college suspended two fourth-year MBBS students for two months for similar ragging allegations against a second-year student.
