Promoted in 1975, Modern School, Vasant Vihar is a co-educational day school affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi. Back in 1920, at a time when education was considered to be the privilege of only the rich, Lala Raghubir Singh envisioned a school that would provide exceptional educational opportunities to all students irrespective of caste, creed and social status. His dreams took the shape of the first Modern School at No. 24 Daryaganj Delhi, which has now grown into three institutions – Lala Raghubir Singh Junior Modern School Humayun Road, Modern School Barakhamba Road & Modern School Vasant Vihar – all located in New Delhi.
Uniting utility with beauty, the nine-acre campus of Modern School with exposed brickwork, arched openings, circular windows and long corridors lined are a delight every morning for students and teachers. The natural lighting and open spaces are natural pathways for cool fresh air which keep the classrooms well-ventilated throughout the day. The campus affords large spaces for track and field activities, lawn tennis, badminton, basketball, soccer and also has an Olympic size swimming pool.
The school library offers a good collection of books and magazines and a separate reading room for the junior section. The campus also houses well equipped labs for biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, computer and robotics. The school boasts of smart classes, a well-equipped multimedia and web technology lab, besides world class infrastructure for sports and extracurricular activities.
The junior section learns subjects like English, Hindi, mathematics, science and social studies, art of healthy and productive living, music, dance, art, games and value-based education. There are no formal examinations for pre-primary and primary sections; instead, students are evaluated on their performance in class throughout the year and progress report is shared with parents thrice a year. Classes IX to XII follow the curriculum prescribed by the CBSE and classes VI to VIII follow an in-house curriculum, formulated as per NCERT guidelines. Students can choose between science, commerce and humanities streams in class XI.
The school encourages co-curricular activities such as dance, dramatics, vocal music, painting, western music, clay modelling, sculpture and storytelling, besides sports and games such as cricket, soccer, basketball, chess and table tennis.
