June 12, 2024

A recent report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) provides a comprehensive analysis of the educational qualifications of 71 ministers in India’s new council. The report reveals a wide range of academic backgrounds among the country’s political leadership. It highlights that 11 ministers, accounting for 15% of the total, have declared their highest educational qualification as 12th standard. This indicates that a minority of the ministers did not pursue formal education beyond high school.

In stark contrast, the majority of the ministers have attained higher education. The report indicates that 57 ministers, or 80%, have qualifications at the graduate level or higher. This group is further categorized to reflect various levels of advanced education, underscoring the diversity in academic attainment among the ministers.

Specifically, 14 ministers have declared themselves as graduates, holding basic university degrees. An additional 10 ministers possess professional graduate degrees, which signify specialized education in fields such as law, engineering, or medicine. This suggests that a segment of the ministers has professional expertise in specific areas.

The largest subgroup within the highly educated ministers comprises those with postgraduate degrees, numbering 26. This reflects a significant commitment to advanced academic pursuits beyond the undergraduate level. Moreover, seven ministers have achieved the highest level of academic attainment by earning doctorate degrees, highlighting a dedication to extensive research and scholarly work.

Besides these categories, there are three ministers who are diploma holders. These ministers have completed specialized programs that provide vocational or technical training, indicating a focus on practical skills and applied knowledge.

Overall, the ADR report underscores the educational diversity within the new council of ministers, with a significant majority having pursued higher education. This diversity in educational backgrounds suggests a blend of practical, professional, and academic expertise among the country’s political leadership.
