July 25, 2024

A case has been registered against the principal of a private school in Guna, Madhya Pradesh, for allegedly stopping students from reciting a Sanskrit ‘sloka,’ according to a police official on Thursday. Sources reported that the principal has already apologized.

The incident occurred on July 15 at Vandana Convent School during the morning assembly when three students recited ‘Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah, Sarve Bhavantu Sukhmaya’. Principal Sister Catherine allegedly interrupted them, stating such “shayariya” wouldn’t be tolerated, as detailed in the FIR.

After the incident became known two days later, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members protested at the school, leading to police involvement. Despite the principal’s apology, explaining it was an English-only day, the protesters demanded her removal and police action.

The District Education Officer assured a probe into the matter. Following a complaint, an FIR was filed against the principal under sections promoting enmity and outraging religious feelings. The principal was unavailable for comment. Meanwhile, opposition leader Shekhar Vashisht urged the school not to consider closing, citing the impact on students’ futures.
