Mumbai University to hold final-year exams for 50 marks, limit to an hour

Maharashtra final year exams

After Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, who is also the Chancellor of all state universities said that a decision needs to be taken on the timetable and mode of conducting final-year exams by the statutory bodies (academic council and board of examinations) of each university, the University of Mumbai (MU) conducted its academic council meet on Saturday, September 4, 2020.

The Mumbai University has decided that the examinations for the students will be limited to one hour, and will be for 50 marks. Only part of the syllabus taught until March 13 will be considered for the exams. A member of the academic council stated, “This will apply to all undergraduate and postgraduate courses that follow the 40:60 pattern. The exams will be of 50 marks, and the university is keen on administering multiple choice questionnaires. The departments, though, are waiting for a circular to appoint a panel for conducting exams and start preparations for formulating question papers.”

The Minister of Higher and Technical Education department Uday Samant had earlier said that the universities have been asked to submit their action plan on conducting exams to the government by September 7.

The Supreme Court on August 28, 2020, upheld the University Grants Commission (UGC)’s July 6 circular stating that final year examinations must be conducted by September 30. The apex court ruled that states must hold examinations to promote students and that states can postpone examinations under the Disaster Management Act, in view of the Covid-19 pandemic. They can consult the UGC to fix fresh dates.
