The Nagaland government plans to establish nursing schools in every district to meet the growing demand for healthcare workers, Health Minister P. Paiwang Konyak announced on Tuesday. Speaking at the platinum jubilee celebration of the School of Nursing in Kohima, he revealed that the Centre has approved two nursing colleges, which will be affiliated with the Nagaland Institute of Medical Science & Research (NIMSR) in Kohima and the upcoming Mon Medical College.
This initiative aims to address workforce shortages, improve access to nursing education, and enhance healthcare quality in the state. Konyak encouraged nurses to explore opportunities beyond traditional hospital roles, such as homecare and palliative care.
Emphasizing the crucial role of nurses in the healthcare system, he highlighted the importance of embracing technology to enhance their capabilities, improve patient care, and adapt to a rapidly changing healthcare landscape. He also urged nurses to be mindful of ethical and legal issues related to data security and patient confidentiality, as these are vital for maintaining trust and legal compliance.
Konyak acknowledged the dedication of both former and current faculty at the School of Nursing, whose commitment to innovation and patient-centered care has set a high standard for nursing education in the state. Principal Director of Health Motsuthung Patton described nursing as a noble profession that requires dedication and compassion, referring to nurses as “superheroes” who tirelessly work to ensure the health and well-being of the community.
