National Education Day 2024: Honoring Maulana Abul Kalam Azad

10 Facts about Maulana Azad on National Education Day

Every year on November 11, India commemorates National Education Day in honor of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first Minister of Education in independent India and a visionary leader who championed the cause of education for all. This year, the significance of the day is more profound as it invites us to reflect on the progress we’ve made and the challenges that lie ahead in our education system.

A Legacy of Education

Maulana Azad played a pivotal role in shaping India’s educational landscape. He believed that education is a powerful tool for social change and national development. Under his leadership, key initiatives were launched, including the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) system and the University Grants Commission (UGC), which aimed to enhance higher education and research in India.

His vision emphasized inclusivity, advocating that education should be accessible to all, regardless of background. This philosophy continues to resonate today as we strive to create an education system that is equitable and empowering.

Significance of National Education Day

National Education Day serves multiple purposes. It not only pays tribute to Azad’s contributions but also highlights the ongoing need for educational reform in India. As we celebrate this day, it is essential to acknowledge the various challenges facing our education sector, including disparities in access, quality of education, and the need for innovation in teaching methods.

In recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated these challenges, underscoring the urgent need for digital literacy and adaptable learning environments. National Education Day serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to ensure that every child receives quality education, which is fundamental for their development and the nation’s progress.

Theme for 2024: “Transforming Education through Digital Innovation”

This year, the theme for National Education Day is “Transforming Education through Digital Innovation.” This theme emphasizes the critical role that technology plays in reshaping the educational landscape. As we move towards a more digital world, integrating technology into education is no longer optional; it is essential.

Digital innovation can enhance learning experiences, making education more engaging and accessible. It offers opportunities for personalized learning, collaboration, and resource sharing, breaking down geographical barriers. However, it also brings challenges, such as the digital divide, which we must address to ensure that all students can benefit from technological advancements.

Education expert voices

“On this National Education Day, we stand at a pivotal moment in the evolution of our education system. The world is changing at an unprecedented pace, and the challenges our students will face are growing more complex. As an education reformist, I believe that the future of education must prioritise the development of critical thinking, adaptability, and a deep sense of social responsibility in our learners.  The education sector must embrace innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to equity if we want to equip our youth with the skills and values they need to create positive change in the world. There is also a need to inculcate Community Centric Education where students learn to give back to the society, and thus the seeds to create a better world are sowed early on. On this National Education Day, let us renew. – Sanamdeep Chadha, Director of Genesis Global School.

As we commemorate National Education Day 2024, we honor the legacy of India’s first Education Minister, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, whose vision laid the foundation for education as a force for national growth. Today, in a world of rapid transformation, education is not just a tool for social mobility but a critical driver for addressing the growing skill gaps in our economy. According to the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), India faces a striking shortfall of skilled workers, with a projected deficit of 30-32 million by 2025 and up to 49 million by 2027, affecting critical industries like manufacturing, healthcare, real estate, and construction. This highlights the pressing need for collaborative efforts to bridge the gap between demand and supply of skilled talent. The responsibility to empower young minds through accessible, quality education is shared by government, industry, and society at large, and is the first step to bridging this skills gap. Businesses, in particular, have an opportunity—and a duty—to contribute meaningfully through initiatives like scholarships, mentorship, and partnerships with academia. At RR Kabel, we are committed to doing our part through our Kabel Stars Scholarship, launched in 2022 to support the children of our ‘Kabel Dost’ electrician community. By enabling deserving students to pursue higher education without financial barriers, we aim to fuel the dreams of a new generation, equipping them with the skills to meet the demands of an evolving job market. On National Education Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to making quality education universally accessible. Investing in education is investing in our collective future, one where every young Indian has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to the nation’s progress.” – Kirti Kabra, Director at RR Global.

“Education is not just gathering facts, but the awakening of curiosity that turns every moment into an opportunity to learn and grow. It’s the light that turns anxiety into capability, confusion into clarity, and small dreams into grand achievements. Beyond degrees and certificates lies education’s true gift, the ability to understand our world and shape it for the better. For in its essence, education is not just about learning what was, but imagining what could be. It isn’t about having all the answers, it’s about never stopping to ask questions. It’s the tool that builds bridges between ignorance and understanding, between ‘I can’t’ and ‘I did it.” Ajitesh Basani, Executive Director-Administration, Acharya Bangalore Business School

“Early childhood education nurtures cognitive, social, and emotional growth in young learners, creating an environment that promotes curiosity and a love for discovery. In these formative years, children engage in play-based learning, which enhances critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Activities that emphasise collaboration and communication help foster essential social skills, building both confidence and resilience. By embedding essential values such as perseverance and adaptability, early education cultivates not just academic success but also a lifelong enthusiasm for learning. As we celebrate this day, we recognise that early childhood education as a pivotal catalyst that not only shapes individual futures but also fortifies the fabric of society by empowering future generations to thrive, innovate, and contribute to their communities.” – Dr. Maithili Tambe, CEO, The Academy School (TAS), Pune

“Education is the cornerstone of societal progress, empowering individuals to lead with knowledge, compassion, and purpose.
