National Institute of Technology, Surathkal (also known as National Institute of Technology Karnataka – NITK) is a public engineering university situated near Mangalore. Originally established as Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC) in 1960, it was upgraded to NITK in 2002 and eventually became a ‘Deemed University’. Today, it is considered as an institute of national importance. With a suburban campus about 20 km north of the city of Mangalore, the institute offers undergraduate and graduate courses in engineering, science and management.
Sri. U. Srinivasa Mallya, a visionary and a philanthropist, contributed immensely to the development of the coastal region of Karnataka, and his effort towards establishment NITK is the most significant one. In recognition of his role as the founder and architect of the institute, the campus premise is named after him as Srinivasnagar.
NITK functions with the mission to “impart quality education to meet the needs of the society and achieve excellence in teaching-learning and research”.
NITK is situated on a 295.35-acre campus located on National Highway 66 by the shores of Arabian Sea. Most students and staff members reside on campus. Staff quarters consist of the director’s quarters, professors & assistant professors’ quarters, lecturers & assistant lecturers’ quarters, warden quarters, bachelors’ quarters and non-teaching staff colony. There are more than 200 residences on campus including independent houses and flats. The institute also houses four guesthouses: J C Bose Guest House, Vikram Sarabhai Guest House, Homi J Bhaba Guest House and International Hostel.
The Central Library is spread over 2,758 mt. sq. of floor area and its three reading halls can accommodate a total of 600 students. The Central Computer Centre, established in 1995 as a supporting facility, maintains the network backbone of the college and has computer labs that augment the computing facilities in the teaching departments. The campus also includes a Cooperative Society, a marketing center and ATM and banking facilities. Both State Bank of India and Canara Bank have branches in the campus along with ATM facility.
The campus also houses a staff club, a post office and two schools (Kannada and English medium. There is also an open-air theatre for the student activities.
A full-fledged Physical Education & Sports Department with two Students’ Activity and Sports Officers (SAS Officers) and one Assistant Physical Director provide and manage sports, games and physical fitness facilities. Infrastructure facilities are available in the sports centre for indoor and outdoor sports. In addition, a swimming pool of international standard is also available. A new and modern Sports Complex has been set up in the campus which was inaugurated by the Honorable HRD Minister.

Placements:
The Career Development Centre (CDC) of NITK organises placement drives evert year for final year UG and PG students. Students are required to register at the CDC centres with their credentials, and are trained and guided for placements by the CDC and placement team. Over 190 companies are invited by the CDC every year and participate in the NITK annual placement drives.
NITK placement highlights- 2020: With 90% students placed, NITK saw a whopping 977 students placed from a total of 1293, the highest CTC being recorded at INR 51.5 LPA. The average CTC stood at INR 17 LPA. More than 267 companies participated in the 2020 placement drive with 65 new companies offering internships to students. Top recruiters included Microsoft, Uber, Samsung, Tata Motors and Morgan Stanley.
