National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (also known as NIT Trichy or NITT) is a public technical and research university located in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India. Founded in 1964, it is one of India’s oldest technical universities and is located in an 800-acre campus. The university is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India under the National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research Act, 2007 and is one of the members of the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) system.
The university focuses exclusively on science, technology, engineering, management, and architecture. A total of 6,358 students are part of the institution with a faculty strength of 246. It ranks first among the NITs by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (2020), and 24th overall in India.
Situated on an 800-acre campus, NIT Trichy has one of the largest academic campuses in India. The institute’s academic facilities are located in the southern half of the campus which include the department buildings, laboratories and workshops, lecture halls, computer centres and the central library. The campus has separate buildings for the departments of nine engineering, architecture, management, computer applications, energy and environment engineering, each department having its own library.
The central library houses more than one lakh resources including books, periodicals and journals in print and electronic format. The “Octagon” is the computer centre and houses the computer support group. The “Orion” is the lecture hall complex for the undergraduate students comprising 24 large lecture halls, each with a capacity of 200 students equipped with projectors and televisions. The old lecture hall complex which has forty lecture halls is currently used for the academic classes and lectures for first-year undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students.
Other facilities offered within the NIT Trichy campus include residential facilities: hostels and mess, guest houses and quarters, a hospital, shopping centre, multiple cafeterias, security provisions, transport and other campus communication services.
Sports facilities on campus include a physical education/sports centre and swimming pool.

Placements:
The NIT Trichy placement cell aims to nurture industry-institute interaction by organizing and coordinating individual expert counselling, frequent industrial visits, in-plant training and projects of industrial relevance for the students. It organizes and coordinates campus placement program every year to fulfil its commitment of a job to every aspirant, making available the updated database and job profile of nearly 500 companies in its database which help each student analyse and choose company of their interest.
Over 220 companies participate in the placement process every year. The average compensation during the current year is over Rs.6 lakhs with the highest being $125,000 per annum (one of the three selected from all over India is from NITT; the other two being from IITs). The institute enjoys best placements when it comes to PG programmes. The placement procedure is as follows:
2020 placement highlights: A total of 220 companies participated in the 2020 placement drive where 92% undergraduate and 87.1% postgraduate students were placed. The average CTC stood at INR 6 LPA for 5-year UGs, INR 9 LPA for 4-year UGs, INR 10 LPA for 3-year PGs and INR 6.1 LPA for 2-year PGs. Top recruiters who participated in the placement drive included Yahoo, Wipro, Volvo, HCL, Godrej, Ford, HP and HDFC Bank.

NIT Trichy was declared as an institute of national importance by the Government of India in 2007.In 2015, it was titled as the “Best Industry-linked centrally funded technical institution in India” by the Confederation of Indian Industry. In 2017, it was named as the “University of the Year” in the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry awards.
It ranks first among the NITs by the National Institutional Ranking Framework, 24th overall in India, eighth for architecture, ninth for engineering and 35th for management in 2020.
The QS World University Rankings ranked NIT Trichy 251-260 in Asia in 2021 and 126 among BRICS nations in 2019 rankings. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked the institute 1001+ globally, 301-350 among universities of emerging economies and 251-300 among universities of Asia in 2021 rankings.
