The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has been entrusted with granting equivalence to Class 10 and 12 certificates issued by various school education boards across India, the Ministry of Education announced on Friday.
The move, formalised through a notification in the e-Gazette, supersedes an earlier order of 15 November 2021, which had assigned this responsibility to the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
NCERT will carry out the task through its National Assessment Centre, PARAKH (Performance Assessment, Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development), established under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
According to the ministry, the new institutional mechanism will ensure “a robust and academically rigorous process” for determining equivalence, applicable across central and state governments as well as recognised private school boards.
The equivalence granted by NCERT will be valid nationwide, providing inter-se parity among boards and enabling smooth student migration between them for higher education admissions and government recruitment.
