The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed attention to the Telangana government regarding reported challenges faced by girl students at a high school in Nalgonda district due to inadequate toilet facilities. According to a statement released on Monday, the NHRC expressed concern over the situation, stating that if the reports are accurate, they represent a significant violation of the students’ human rights.
The NHRC highlighted that it has taken note of a media report outlining the difficulties experienced by girl students at the Devarakonda Zila Parishad High School for Girls in Nalgonda district. The report indicates that due to the absence of proper toilet facilities at the school, girl students resorted to using urinals at Sulabh complexes, but were asked to pay for it, leading to discontinuation. Subsequently, they started using free toilets at the Devarakonda Bus Stop, but were denied access by the management.
Emphasizing the importance of adequate toilet facilities, especially for female students, the NHRC underscored that such amenities are fundamental and should be ensured by the school management. The Commission expressed grave concern over the safety and security implications of forcing female students to use public toilets outside the school premises.
In response to the situation, the NHRC has issued a notice to the chief secretary of the Telangana government, demanding a comprehensive report within four weeks. The report should outline the measures taken or proposed to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
