Overview

Established in 1887 by the amalgamation of Hyderabad School and the Madarsa-i-Aliya, Nizam College is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in south India. The college was originally affiliated to the Madras University for 60 years and was made a constituent college of Osmania University on February 19, 1947. Dr. Aghornath Chattopadhyay, father of Sarojini Naidu, was the founder principal of the college. The college was first granted autonomy for undergraduate courses by the University Grant Commission(UGC) in 1988-89. Nizam College was also granted the ‘College with Potential for Excellence’ status by UGC.

Campus

Nizam College is located in the heart of the city of Hyderabad in a sprawling 20-acre campus. There are numerous buildings housing classrooms, laboratories, computer labs, library and administrative offices. The vast campus area helps in creating an atmosphere conducive for the students’ holistic development. Equipped with two seminar halls, play grounds, a language lab, boxing hall, canteen, library and parking space, the college has a congenial setting for learning. Over the last few years, 24 classrooms, a sports complex, a chemistry block with six labs and classrooms and a new hostel building have been added. The college currently has 73 class rooms and 46 labs with state-of-the-art equipment.

Academics

The College offers both the undergraduate as well as postgraduate courses in the faculties of management, arts and social sciences, science, and commerce. Undergraduate courses offered include B.B.A., B.Sc., B.A., B.Com. and B.C.A. There are 13 postgraduate programs leading to M.A., M.Sc. and M.Com. degrees. There is a new five-year integrated M.Sc. course in Chemistry. The college also offers M.B.A., M.C.A and M.Sc. (IS) professional courses. In addition, there are almost a dozen add-on courses (certificate, diploma and PG diploma courses.)

Achievement

;Nizam college has received the status of the College with Potential for Excellence both under the X Plan and the XI Plan period. The College is accredited by NAAC in March 2019 with 'B⁺⁺' grade with a CGPA of 2.92.
