Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus will be the chief adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government, announced the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement coordinators on Tuesday.
In a video posted on social media, key coordinator Nahid Islam stated that Prof. Yunus agreed to this critical role at the students’ request to help stabilize the country, according to the Daily Star.
“We decided to announce the interim government framework now due to the urgent situation,” Nahid explained, accompanied by two other coordinators.
This announcement follows President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s statement that an interim government will be formed after dissolving parliament. He also ordered the release of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, who has been under house arrest.
Nahid urged the president to swiftly establish an interim government led by Dr. Yunus and mentioned that the names of other members would be revealed soon.
He criticized the ongoing violence, attributing it to “ousted fascists and their collaborators” trying to sabotage the revolution. He called for urgent measures to restore order and assured that students would support law enforcement in these efforts.
“No government other than the one proposed by the students will be accepted,” Nahid emphasized, rejecting any military-backed or fascist government.
The situation in Bangladesh has deteriorated significantly since Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s sudden resignation and escape from the country on a military aircraft. Her departure led to widespread unrest, with protesters attacking and vandalizing her residence, as well as other government and party properties in Dhaka and beyond. This violence, which has claimed over 300 lives in the past fortnight, reflects the deepening crisis and the urgent need for a stable government to address the nation’s turmoil.
