Noida Police made a significant breakthrough on Monday, arresting six individuals and dismantling a gang that preyed on students seeking admission to esteemed colleges and universities. Operating from Noida and Pune, the gang reportedly scammed “hundreds of students” out of “crores of rupees,” as per a police official.
Additional DCP (Noida) Manish Kumar Mishra disclosed, “We confiscated 61 post-dated cheques amounting to Rs 5.06 crore from the possession of the gang.”
The arrested suspects, including two women, were identified as Rahul Kumar (30), Anupam Kumar (28), Dayanand Pandey (25), Sachin Singh (25), Vidushi Lohia (37), and Nikita Upadhyay (24). However, one member, Sonu Kumar alias Ranveer Singh, remains at large.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Noida-3) Shavya Goyal outlined the gang’s modus operandi, stating they exploited social media platforms to lure unsuspecting students. They promised admissions in various colleges and universities, except prestigious institutions like IITs and IIMs.
An FIR has been filed under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), 467, 468, 471 (related to forgery), and 34 (common intention). Additionally, charges under the Information Technology Act have been levied against the accused.
The suspects are currently undergoing legal proceedings in a local court. This successful operation by Noida Police serves as a warning to those engaging in fraudulent practices, particularly in the education sector, and underscores the authorities’ commitment to protecting students from such scams.
