Days after releasing an “audit report” on the safety of women students on Delhi University campus, the student wing of Congress party, NSUI, held a rally in North Campus demanding that the administration implement its recommendations.
Released on Friday, the audit report stated that one in every four women studying in the university has faced sexual harassment. “Of 188 cases of harassment faced by the respondents, 40 were cases of physical harassment. One in five cases of harassment were of touching or groping. Lewd gestures, staring and vulgar comments make up for the most rampant kind of harassment,” the report stated.
A delegation led by NSUI national president Fairoz Khan met Delhi University Proctor Neeta Sehgal and submitted a copy of the audit report and the recommendations. “The administration has accepted the findings of our audit and has agreed to all our demands – which include implementation of UGC guidelines with regard to Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), installation of CCTVs for ensuring a safe and secure campus and deployment of Delhi Police personnel outside every DU college,” the Congress students wing said in a statement.
NSUI made various recommendations, including the scrapping of ICC in cases where it has been constituted without democratic elections, awareness programmes regarding the committee, street lighting in sensitive areas and a crackdown on drinking in public spaces.
