The Congress-backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has staged a major comeback in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections after seven years, winning the president and joint secretary positions.
NSUI’s Rounak Khatri won the presidential race, defeating ABVP’s Rishabh Chaudhary by over 1,300 votes, securing 20,207 votes to Chaudhary’s 18,864. This is NSUI’s first presidential victory since 2017. Lokesh Choudhary of NSUI also clinched the joint secretary post with 21,975 votes, defeating ABVP’s Aman Kapasia by 6,726 votes.
Meanwhile, the RSS-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) retained influence by securing the vice-president and secretary positions. Bhanu Pratap Singh won the vice-president post with 24,166 votes, defeating NSUI’s Yash Nandal by 8,762 votes. Mitravinda Karanwal was elected secretary, beating NSUI’s Namrata Jeph Meena by 1,447 votes.
Celebrations erupted in the NSUI camp, with members chanting slogans and carrying leaders on their shoulders. Due to DU’s ban on loud celebrations, students peacefully marched towards the Swami Vivekananda statue on campus.
Khatri emphasized NSUI’s hard work and dedication, promising to focus on students’ welfare. “This victory symbolizes the triumph of real work over empty promises,” he said.
Delhi Congress President Devender Yadav viewed the win as a sign that Delhi’s youth seek change, suggesting the Congress party is on a path to revival ahead of next year’s assembly elections.
