The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) has maintained 100 per cent placements for the batch of 2019-20 despite the economic crisis triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic, according to N. K. Chakrabarti, NUJS vice-chancellor.
The average annual packages have also remained almost the same as previous years, the vice-chancellor said.
The annual packages offered by the foreign law firms ranged from Rs 42 to 46 lakhs and annual packages of Rs 15-18 lakhs have been offered by the domestic law firms which is almost the same as the amount offered to students recruited in the previous years.
The campus interviews for the 2019-20 batch were held before the Covid-19 pandemic and some recruiters had selected the candidates before March last year. But the interviews of many students were held during the pandemic. The students started working from July-August last year.
“The pandemic has posed a number of challenges. We are happy to see that the hiring trend in our institute has remained the same despite the pandemic. This shows the faith of the recruiters in the academic and professional capabilities of our students,” said Chakrabarti.
A total of 119 job offers were made to the graduating batch of 2020 with many of the students receiving multiple offers, according to the students managing the NUJS Campus Recruitment Committee (CRC) . At NUJS the campus recruitment process is managed by the CRC which comprises nine students.
A total of 78 students accepted the job offers but some students decided to opt for alternative career options despite getting selected by the recruiters, according to the CRC.
As many as 17 students opted to join litigation chambers and eight and nine students decided to go for civil services and judicial services respectively.
Four students opted to do policy and research work, while two joined start-ups, according to the CRC.
“Despite the pandemic, the record of the batch of 2020 continues along the path of excellence that has been a hallmark of NUJS and its graduating students over the years,” according to the CRC.
