An MBBS student at the government-run MKCG Medical College in Berhampur, Odisha, allegedly faced ragging and assault by senior students, as reported by his father to the anti-ragging cell. The incident came to light when the father filed a complaint, accusing two senior students of beating up his second-year MBBS student son inside the campus late Friday evening.
The college’s internal committee has initiated an inquiry into the allegations, and the findings will be submitted to the anti-ragging cell for further action, said the Principal of MKCG Medical College, Santosh Kumar Mishra. Additionally, the victim has filed a police complaint against the two seniors, leading to a separate investigation by the police, who have registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
According to the complaint, the assault occurred when the victim was returning to the hostel after a band practice on a motorcycle. Two senior students requested a ride to Gents Hostel 1, and upon getting down from the two-wheeler, they allegedly assaulted the victim without any provocation. The victim, identified as Rout, claimed to have suffered injuries to his neck during the attack.
Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M mentioned that a medical examination of the victim had been conducted, and statements from the victim and others were recorded. The nature of the incident, whether it qualifies as ragging, will be determined through the ongoing inquiry.
