In a significant move aimed at improving the educational system, the Odisha government has announced that the minimum age for enrolling in Class-1 will be 6 years, as of September 1, starting from the 2025-26 academic session. This decision has been outlined in an official notification issued by the state government.
Under this new policy, all primary schools in Odisha will also be introducing an additional preschool class, called ‘Sishu Vatika,’ which will cater to children in the age group of 5-6 years. This initiative is designed to provide a more structured foundation for early education, helping young learners adapt to the formal schooling environment before they enter Class-1.
The state government is also set to overhaul its curriculum framework in a phased manner from the 2025-26 academic session. In the first phase, the National Curriculum Framework Foundational Stage (NCF FS) will be implemented. This framework is aimed at creating a more holistic and child-friendly learning experience for students in the early years, focusing on their cognitive, emotional, and social development.
This change in the enrollment policy and curriculum structure is expected to better align with the national education standards and contribute to the overall enhancement of early childhood education in Odisha. The introduction of ‘Sishu Vatika’ and the adoption of NCF FS will ensure that children receive the necessary early exposure to academics, fostering a smoother transition into primary education.
