A cutting-edge smart Braille classroom is slated to be established at a government-run school for the blind in Burla, Sambalpur district, Odisha. The Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) has formalized this initiative through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) on Thursday.
Under the terms of the MoU, Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) will provide the necessary funds for the development of the smart Braille classroom, with the corporation overseeing the project’s execution, as explained by SMC Commissioner Vedbhushan.
The innovative smart Braille classroom incorporates an interactive learning approach, featuring an audio system and a unique capability to capture and analyze the usage patterns of visually impaired students.
Susama Sahu, the principal of the government school for the blind, expressed optimism about the positive impact of the smart classroom on the learning experience of visually impaired students. She highlighted that the smart classroom would not only facilitate easier and more engaging learning but also provide technical knowledge to the students.
To enhance the learning experience, the classroom will utilize ‘Annie,’ a comprehensive Braille self-learning device designed to make learning fun, engaging, and intuitive for blind students. ‘Annie’ employs touch-friendly devices and guides students with a friendly voice, reducing the need for constant assistance.
While acknowledging the potential benefits of the smart Braille classroom, a teacher from the school emphasized the importance of providing training to educators on the concept before its official launch.
Established in 1972, the school for the blind, deaf, and dumb in Burla came under government ownership in 1980. In 1992, the school for the deaf and dumb and the school for the blind were separated.
