The Odisha government’s initiative comes in response to the persistent issue of high dropout rates among tribal students, particularly at the secondary education level, where many students leave school due to financial constraints. By providing ₹5,000 annually, the government hopes to alleviate some of the economic burdens faced by tribal families, encouraging students to continue their education.
The scheme, ‘Madho Singh Haath Kharch Yojana,’ will cover approximately three lakh students, with a budget allocation of ₹156 crore for its implementation. The initiative not only focuses on reducing dropout rates but also aims to promote higher enrollment in secondary education across tribal regions, where educational access and retention have been longstanding challenges.
The decision was finalized during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who emphasized the importance of investing in education to foster long-term development in tribal communities. Mahaling highlighted that the program is part of a broader effort to create a more equitable educational environment, ensuring that financial difficulties do not become a barrier to learning for tribal students.
The government aims to roll out the scheme this year, with hopes that the financial aid will lead to increased retention rates and a brighter future for tribal students.
