NEET controversy in Lok Sabha

Opposition leaders stage walkout over NEET irregularities

July 1, 2024

There was a bedlam in the Lok Sabha on Monday after members of the opposition parties staged a walkout over the prolonged National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) controversy.

MPs also demanded a dedicated one-day discussion on the NEET paper leak issue. When the demand was denied, INDIA Alliance leaders staged a walk-out led by Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.

As Gandhi raised concerns about irregularities in NEET immediately after the Lok Sabha assembled for the day, union defence minister Rajnath Singh objected that the discussion cannot be held until the motion of thanks on the President’s address is delivered by the House.

“We wanted a one-day discussion on NEET. It is a critical issue. Over two crore students have been impacted. Paper leaks have happened on over 70 occasions in the recent past. We would be happy if you allow a separate discussion on the issue,” Gandhi said.

Speaker Om Birla also denied the opposition’s request saying that the issue can be raised after thanking the president for the address.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi also alleged that his mike was deliberately turned off  when he spoke about NEET the last time in the lower house.
