Overview

Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh is the oldest university of India, founded in 1882 as the University of Punjab at Lahore (now in Pakistan); after the partition of India in 1947, the university was split into two - for Indian Punjab and Pakistani Punjab. The Indian side was rechristened from University of Punjab to University of Panjab to distinguish itself from its Pakistani campus. Panjab University boasts 78 teaching and research departments and 15 centres/chairs for teaching and research at the main campus located at Chandigarh. University also has 188 affiliated colleges spread over Punjab and having one rural Regional Centre at Kauni, and 3 regional centres at Muktsar, Ludhiana and Hoshiarpur and four constituent colleges located at Sikhwala (Sri Muktsar Sahib), Balachaur (SBS Nagar), Nihalsingh Wala (Moga) and Guru Harsahai (Ferozepur). Panjab University Community Radio Station - Jyotirgamaya: 91.2 MHz.

Campus

The Panjab University campus is spread across almost 550 acres in Sector 14 and Sector 25 of Chandigarh and hosts infrastructural facilities such as shopping centre, health centre, bank, post office, swimming pool, gymnasium, sports grounds, botanical gardens, well maintained parks, open air theatre, guest houses, faculty house, seminar complexes, alumni house, community centre and school. The university campus also hosts 8 hostels for boys, 9 hostels for girls, a working women hostel and two sports hostels. Designed by Pierre Jeanneret under the guidance of the legendary Le Corbusier, the Panjab University campus hosts architectural marvels such as the Gandhi Bhawan, a three-winged artistic structure known as the pride of the university, and the Fine Arts Museum series of small galleries arranged around a courtyard, each gallery having a hyperbolic paraboloid roof (umbrella shaped); university library of the Sector 14 campus is a framed structure with red sandstone veneers. The Student Centre with its circular base and a ramp pulsating around its cylindrical body is another land mark building.

Admission

Interested students (including those who have already applied for entrance test to be held in May/June 2015) are required to submit their admission/application forms for all UG/PG courses (except for 1st year classes of the courses where admission is based on JEE-2015, PU-CET (UG)-2015, PUTHAT- 2015 and PU-BA/B.Com, LL.B (Honors) Five Year Integrated course-2015 by June 29, 2015 and for Diploma and Certificate courses latest by July 15, 2015 in the concerned PU department/regional centre, irrespective of the declaration of the result of qualifying exam/entrance Test. Application forms for admission to all courses (except for First Year Classes of the courses where admission is based on JEE-2015, PU-CET-2015-(UG), PUTHAT-2015 and PU-BA/B.Com, LL.B. Achievement

PU has been recognised by the UGC as the "University with Potential for Excellence in Biomedical Sciences" with facilities for Stem Cell Research and Drug Development. During the 11th Five Year Plan (2007-2012), it was awarded as Centre of Excellence in "Application of Nano Materials, Nano Particles and Nano Composites", with a grant of Rs. 3.55 crore and Centre of Excellence in "Cultural Fixation on Honor: A Gender Audit of Punjab and Haryana", with a grant of Rs. 1.85 crore. PU participates in various prestigious International High Energy Research Programmess at Fermilab (USA), KEK (Japan) and CERN (Switzerland). The university is also involved in a big way in CMS and ALICE Experiments at CERN (European Organisation for Nuclear Research) Switzerland and Neutrino Program at Fermilab, USA. The CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) project at Large Hadron Collider is for the discovery of Higgs boson and other new particles. The university had earlier been involved in the Top Quark Discovery (1995) and CP-violation discovery (2001). PU was ranked No.1 in India and No.32 in Asia by Times Higher Education Asian University rankings 2014 and ranked 39 by the Times Higher Education among BRICS and Emerging Economy nations in the THE BRICS Rankings 2015.
