Pradhan slams Bengal’s ‘insensitive’ response to doctor’s murder

August 20, 2024

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan criticized the West Bengal government on Tuesday for its alleged “insensitive attitude” towards the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor, stating that a “fear psychosis” has gripped children across the country following the crime.

Speaking at an IIT Kharagpur event, Pradhan emphasized that both state and central governments must follow the Supreme Court’s directives on the matter. He condemned the state government’s “insensitivity,” “don’t care” attitude, and attempts to conceal evidence.

Pradhan expressed shock that a democratically elected government, which came to power on the slogan of ‘Maa Mati Manush,’ has become “deaf to the cries” for justice. Referring to the arrest of civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, he noted that Roy continued his service with Kolkata Police despite reports of past misdeeds.

Condemning the brutal incident, Pradhan extended his condolences to the victim’s family. The trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered on duty at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

West Bengal Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya declined to comment on Pradhan’s remarks, citing the case as sub judice.
