Founded in 1962, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) Ludhiana is one of India’s premier state agricultural universities. PAU is located in Ludhiana city (Punjab) at a distance of 316 km from New Delhi. The main campus of the university sprawls over 1510 acres while the regional research stations cover a total of 4615 acres.
PAU was declared the Best Agricultural University in India in 1995 because of its outstanding achievements in agricultural research, education and extension. PAU aims to develop effective mechanism to transfer knowledge and technology to farmers and agricultural organisations through extension services.
The 1510 acre university campus hosts 10 research stations, and 5 seed farms. The well-stocked library with its five reading halls has a seating capacity of 760. The Electron Microscopy & Nanoscience Laboratory (EMNL) provides following facilities:

The university hosts vast playgrounds for athletics, basketball, badminton, cricket, football, handball, kabaddi, volleyball, and lawn tennis. For hockey there is an Astroturf ground; in addition there is a swimming pool, a cycling velodrome and indoor stadium with a badminton court and facilities for table tennis, gymnastic, wrestling and weight lifting.
The university offers five Bachelor’s degree, 51 Master’s degree and 42 doctorate programmes under 50 departments of its five constituent colleges. PAU’s various departments offer the following courses:

3. Department of Biochemistry offers Ph.D. in Biochemistry, M.Sc. in Biochemistry and Five Years Integrated M.Sc. (Hons.) in Biochemistry.
4. Department of Botany offers Five Years Integrated M.Sc. (Hons.), M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Botany.
5. Department of Microbiology offers Five Years Integrated M.Sc. (Hons.), M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Microbiology.
6. Department of Zoology offers Five Years Integrated M.Sc. (Hons.), M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Zoology.
7. Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics offers M.Sc. in Physics
8. Department of Business Management offers MBA and Masters in Agricultural Business Management and Ph.D. in Business Management.
9. Department of Agricultural Journalism, Languages & Culture offers MJMC (Masters in Journalism and Mass Communication): and PGDAJMC (Post Graduate Diploma in Agricultural Journalism and Mass Communication).
10. School of Agricultural Biotechnology (BSc., MSC, and Ph.D. in Biotechnology); this school includes the Bioinformatics Centre, established in 1998.
11. Department of Food Science and Technology offers B.tech (HONS.) in food technology and Msc in food science.
Placements:
The placement guidance cell of PAU trains students in honing one of the most demanded skills recruiters expect- communication skills. The placement guidance cell organises several training programmes, workshops, seminars and guest lectures for student personality development. The placement procedure is as follows:
Recent placement highlights- The average CTC recorded in the most recent placement drive stood at INR 3.7 LPA, while the highest CTC was recorded at INR 9 LPA. Top recruiters participating in the placement drive included Aries Agro, Nestle, Pepsi, Chambak Fertilizers, CMC and IFFCO.

PAU was declared the best state agricultural university in 1995 by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.
PAU played a pivotal role to usher in the first green revolution which transformed the socio-economic life of the peasantry of the region. It enabled the country to achieve self-sufficiency in food grains.
PAU was the first university to get special grant of Rs 1 Billion from the Government of India in 2006-07, as an acknowledgement of its role in eliminating food shortages and alleviating hunger.
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranked Punjab Agricultural University 51 among universities in 2019.
