San Diego, California headquartered Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, recently announced the winners of the Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship (QInF) programme in India, which was launched in March 2016. The programme is an extension of the highly successful Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship that began in the United States in 2009 and has expanded into a global programme that has continued to grow with the addition of new universities and students.

The Qualcomm Research team invited applications for the QInF India 2016 programme from master’s and Ph.D. students in the electrical engineering and computer science (and related) departments at select Indian universities viz. Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay; Indian Institute of Technology, Madras; Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad. There was tremendous interest in participating in the programme with more than 30 innovative proposals submitted from the participating universities. Each submission was rigorously reviewed by Qualcomm researchers. All participants were invited to present their research proposals before a panel of executive judges tasked with picking the winning research teams. Four fellowships were granted this year.
The four winning teams in the first occurrence of the Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship programme for India are:
1. Akshat Dave and Anil Kumar Vadathya from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, supervised by Professor Kaushik Mitra have been selected for their proposal “Deep Generative Networks for Computational Photography”.
2. Sanjeev Mk from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, supervised by Professor Siddhartha Chaudhuri, has been selected for his proposal on “Functionality Driven 3D Analysis and Design”.
3. Ravi Kiran from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, supervised by Professor R. Venkatesh Babu, has been selected for his proposal on “Recurrent Deep Neural Nets for Analysis and Synthesis of Hand-Sketched Content”.
4. Saket Saurav and Gourav Kumar from the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad have been selected for their proposal on “Parking Assistant Drone System”.
