Rajasthan Education Minister Madan Dilawar attributed student suicides in the coaching hub of Kota to factors like “love affairs” and stressed the importance of parents being mindful of their children’s well-being without exerting pressure on their studies.
Four students have died by suicide this year in Kota, which witnessed 17 such incidents in 2024, a city renowned for its coaching institutes.
Speaking to reporters after a program in Bundi where SVAMITVA land ownership cards were distributed, Dilawar urged parents to be cautious and not force their children to pursue studies against their interests. “Though some may disagree with my words, parents need to be attentive and avoid putting undue pressure on their children,” he stated.
The minister emphasized that students often struggle with depression when forced to follow career paths they don’t resonate with. While coaching institutes play a minimal role in these tragedies, Dilawar acknowledged that peer pressure and remarks about academic performance, especially from friends, significantly contribute to the stress.
He also highlighted that in some cases, “love affairs” led students to take their own lives. Dilawar further advised parents to closely monitor their children’s routines, noting that a lack of attention often leads to students going down the wrong path.
