Sainik School, Ghorakhal, Nainital, one amongst twenty four Sainik Schools in India, is a residential school for boys from class VI to XII affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi and is a member of Indian Public Schools Conference. Established by the Sainik Schools Society in 1966 at Ghorakhal near Bhowali in Nainital district, the school prepares its students for career in the Armed Forces and for other professions. The school motto ‘Buddhirasya Balantasya’ meaning ‘Wisdom brings Strength’.
The school session begins on April 1 and 70 days vacation is observed in a calendar year split into summer and winter breaks of three weeks and seven weeks respectively.
The 500-acre school campus hosts a well equipped library with more than 15,000 books/encyclopedia/magazines/periodicals/daily newspapers and a reading room. Six computers are placed in the library for multimedia lessons. There is a fully equipped auditorium with LCD projector and a seating capacity of 600 and well equipped labs for math, language and science subjects. The school also hosts two well equipped computer laboratories.
The school houses a well furnished dining hall with a kitchen and bakery that serves both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals. Regular dinner nights are conducted to make cadets accustomed with mess etiquette and month-end birthday dinner is also celebrated.
The school offers adequate infrastructure for hockey, football, cricket, badminton, volleyball, basketball, lawn tennis, athletics and gymnastics besides a host of indoor games for use by the cadets.
The school’s kindergarten cum primary section known as the Bal Vidya Niketan offers schooling to children of the school employees at pre-primary and primary level. The school also offers education at very nominal fee to the children of local villagers.
The school prepares students for All India Senior School Certificate Examination (class XII) and the UPSC Examination for admission to the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla. First terminal, second terminal and annual examinations are held as per school calendar and progress reports of terminal and annual examinations are sent to parents at the end of each examination. Regular class tests are also held to monitor progress.
Computer education is compulsory up to class X and is available as an elective subject in class XI and XII.
NCC Training is compulsory for the cadets. Regular camps are held for junior and senior division cadets. Physical fitness and overall development of the cadets is one of the main focuses of the school. Regular PT and a wide variety of games and sports are conducted throughout the year.
Apart from academics, cadets are subjected to the obligations of community living in the school. They are required to conform to the code of conduct and decent behavior on which good citizenship is founded. Good manners and discipline are integral parts of their training. Cadets get their share of adventure training through frequently organized route marches, treks and hikes.

The entry level is from class VI; boys aged 10 to 11 years can apply to the All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination held in January. The last date for submission of application form usually falls in December first week.
25 percent seats are reserved for Defence candidates and 15 percent and 7.5 percent respectively for SC and ST candidates. The rest of the seats are for General category students.
Since 1993, a small number of candidates are also admitted in Class IX.
Fees
The annual fee is approximately Rs.68,000 inclusive of tuition fee, mess charges, pocket money, clothing and incidental charges. The tuition fee and mess charges are likely to increase by approximately 10 percent annually to cater to inflationary costs.

Sainik School, Ghorakhal boasts high achievements with 358 of its cadets having joined NDA till 2008 and a large number of the alumni having joined IMA, OTA, Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, AFMC, Coast Guard and Merchant Navy. Many others have joined the IAS, IPS, IIT, and banking services.
The school was awarded the ‘Raksha Mantri’s trophy’ for having churned out the largest number of cadets for the NDA four times since 2000.
