Sainik School, Satara is a boys’ boarding school affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Sited on the Pune-Bangalore highway, it was the first Sainik School established in the country. The school was founded in 1961 with an aim to prepare boys academically, mentally and physically for entry into the National Defence Academy and Defence Forces, and provides education to boys from class VI to class XII.
According to a school spokesperson, “The education provided by Sainik school has been moulded scrupulously so as to ensure the cadets acquire confidence leading to self-dependence, accommodating nature, high esteem and respect for the views of others, secular approach and an incessant longing for maintaining sound mind in a sound body which would ultimately make them successful in all walks of life.”
The 115-acre school campus consists of the main school building, NCC office, sports fields, cadets’ houses, staff quarters etc. out of which 80 acres belongs to the Central Govt. Ministry of Defence and 35 acres belongs to Maharashtra Govt.
The school main building consists of offices of the Principal, Headmaster and Registrar. It also houses administrative offices, classrooms, library, laboratories, multimedia hall and staff rooms.
There is a well-furnished auditorium which conducts school functions, debates, quizzes, declamations, elocutions, dramas and other school celebrative events.
Sports facilities provided by the school include a well-equipped and furnished gym with the required apparatus and a variety of indoor and outdoor games. Along with nine playfields, the school has basketball courts, a volleyball court, football court, hockey court, lawn tennis courts, squash court, boxing ring, swimming pool, parade ground and a stadium. The school also has a riding school for cadets.
Sainik School Satara is affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and follows the CBSE curriculum. Class XII students appear for the All-India Senior School Certificate Examination. Cadets are also prepared for entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA) and other defence academies.
Due to prevailing pandemic conditions, the school is conducting online classes through the “Zoom” video application. Cadets are to attempt all the assignments given through the school website and follow the teacher’s instructions.

Admission is open for classes VI and IX only. Girls are not admitted in this school. Admission for classes VI and IX is carried out on the basis of an entrance exam usually held in January. Boys between the age of 10-12 years for admission to class VI and 13-15 for admission in class IX on 31 March of the year in which admission is sought are eligible to take the examination. For admission to class IX, the boys should be studying in class VIII in a recognized school. Admissions are made strictly in order of merit only in classes VI and IX.

Relaxation in age limit is not permissible under any circumstances.

Cadets Residence – there are six cadets’ houses accommodating 620 cadets. Houses are well equipped with all residential needs. A well-equipped mess is provided with a dining capacity of 620 cadets plus 50 staff members at a time.
There are residential quarters for all staff members within the school premises.
