Sarala Birla Academy’s sustainable farming project

farming

The children of Sarala Birla Academy have partnered with Akshayakalpa Organic for a project on sustainable farming initiative aimed at achieving nutrition in a naturally healthy and flavourful manner. This initiative, integrating traditional farming practices with scientific expertise, aims to create in the children an awareness on sustainable farms that support nature, preserve heritage and cater to the growing demand for complete and convenient nutrition.

The organic farming project was launched at Sarala Birla Academy (SBA) to engage young learners in socially productive activities and foster awareness of sustainable living in a consumer-driven era. The initiative commenced on January 23, 2025, with an educational and practical approach involving students from Grades V to VIII.

Project Timeline:

Day 1 (23 Jan 2025): Students from Grades V, VI, and VII were introduced to the fundamentals of organic farming, including ground preparation and weed removal.

Day 2 (24 Jan 2025): The students prepared planting beds using a mix of 20% organic manure and 80% soil. Experts demonstrated the technique, and students successfully created two additional beds. Each bed was bordered with concrete slabs and allocated among different grades.

Day 3 (25 Jan 2025): Students proceeded with seed sowing: Grades V and VI sowed Amaranths and Bush Beans, Grade VI planted Fenugreek and Coriander, while Grade VIII sowed Spinach and Beetroot.

Day 4 (1 Feb 2025): A session on organic manure preparation was conducted. Students learned to create manure using vegetable peels and cow dung.

Day 5 (2 Feb 2025): Experts guided students in preparing bio-pesticides (Dashaparni) using ten varieties of bitter leaves mixed with cow urine, requiring a three-week incubation period before use.

This hands-on initiative not only provided students with practical knowledge of organic farming but also instilled values of sustainability and environmental responsibility, values that Sarala Birla Academy takes very seriously.
