The School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi (SPA) is a higher education federal institute serving as the national centre of excellence in the fields of planning and architecture. The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and executive education programs. It is one of the three Schools of Planning and Architecture (the other two being SPA Bhopal and SPA Vijayawada) established by the Government of India with the objective of providing quality Architecture and physical planning education.
Established in 1941 as the Department of Architecture of Delhi Polytechnic, it was later affiliated with the University of Delhi and integrated with the School of Town and Country Planning which was established in 1955 by the Government of India to provide facilities for rural, urban and regional planning. On integration, the school was renamed as School of Planning and Architecture in 1959. Today, the SPAs are autonomous and exercise independent control over its day-to-day operations though their administration is overseen by the SPA council, headed by India’s Minister of Human Resource Development, which declared SPA Delhi an “Institution of National Importance”
SPA’s mission is to develop innovative professionals who are rooted in our cultural ethos contributing in a wholesome way to nation building.
The SPA Delhi campus is split in two blocks, one each for Planning and Architecture, housed near ITO in Indraprastha Estate in New Delhi. The girls hostel is located in the ITO campus itself and the boys hostel and residential campus is located in New Friends Colony, Maharani Bagh, Delhi.
A site of 20 acres has been acquired south of JNU by the school adjacent to Hotel Grand for developing a new campus .
The school offers planning, architecture and design courses both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It offers 10 postgraduate programmes and two undergraduate programmes along with the doctoral programmes run by all the departments of studies.

Each department of studies has a Departmental Research Committee and Head of the Department of Studies is its chairperson. Academic policy is decentralised to the extent that each department of studies has its own Board of Studies, which makes proposals on department related academic matters. Chairperson of the Board of Studies is Head of the Department of Studies. Dean of Studies is the member on all Boards of Studies.
Placements:
School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi is known for providing quality education in architecture, planning and design in UG, PG and research programmes, and thus is widely recognised by recruiters. The SPA Delhi placement cell offers internships (in-house internships also offered), graduate assistantships and placement opportunities to its students.
Some of the top recruiters who participate in the SPA placement drives include Ernst & Young, SYSTRA India, Infosys, Turner and IPE Global Limited.
2020 placement highlights:
The median ICT for B.Arch. was recorded at INR 4 LPA while the median ITC for M.Arch. was at INR 4.61 LPA. These were topped by 2019 placement ICT’s, where the median salary for B.Arch. was INR 5.4 LPA and that for M.Arch. was INR 5.45 LPA.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranked SPA Delhi fifth in architecture in 2020.
India Today 2021 ranked SPA Delhi second for architecture.
SPA offers accommodation facilities for both boys and girls. There are two hostels for students. The girls hostel is located in the ITO campus itself and the boys hostel and residential campus is located in New Friends Colony, Maharani Bagh, Delhi. Both the hostels have mess arrangements, medical facilities, TV rooms, and gym facilities.
