On Saturday, teachers from various schools in Kolkata took to the streets in a protest march demanding severe punishment for those responsible for the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The rally, organized under the banner ‘Teachers for RG Kar,’ began at Sealdah station and proceeded to Shyambazar, near the state-run hospital where the tragic incident occurred. The teachers, holding placards and banners, chanted slogans such as “we want justice” and “justice for RG Kar” to voice their outrage and demand accountability.
The demonstration was a response to the heinous crime that took place on August 9, when the body of the postgraduate trainee doctor was found in the hospital. The teachers, visibly distressed and united in their cause, demanded that the accused receive exemplary punishment. They stressed the need for prompt legal action to ensure justice and prevent such crimes from recurring. Additionally, they called for enhanced security measures for women in workplaces and insisted that anyone found to be protecting or shielding the perpetrators should also face harsh penalties.
This march marked the second rally organized by the teaching community in protest against the crime, reflecting a growing movement among educators and the public to address issues of safety and justice. The teachers’ unified stand highlights their commitment to advocating for systemic changes and increased protection for women, reinforcing their demand for a rigorous and fair investigation into the case.
