The Union HRD minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said that the schools might reopen after the class 10 and 12 board examinations. He said it would however depend on the ground situation at the time.
There has been speculation around schools reopening in June after the lockdown norms were relaxed in several parts of the country. The minister, however, told NDTV that the tentative date for reopening schools and colleges will be more than a month away. “The board exams will be held from July 1 to 15. The schools will reopen after that,” he said.
As the number of coronavirus cases in the country is likely to increase, he said, “We cannot predict what is going to happen in July. We are being guided by the home ministry and the health ministry. We will abide by their decision. The safety of students is the most important factor. If the situation doesn’t get better, we will also consult the student and parents and consider all their suggestions.”
The pending board examinations will be held in July and university exams in August. The final year students will appear for examinations but the students of first and second year will be promoted based on their internal assessment. The NCERT will assess the situation for reopening of schools and the UGC will submit a plan for reopening of colleges.
