Noted scientist and orator Dr N Gopalakrishnan passed away after collapsing on his way home. He was 68. Gopalakrishnan was immediately rushed to the hospital but could not be saved, according to his family members.
Prime minister Narendra Modi has penned a tribute to the deceased researcher. He took to twitter to say, “Saddened by the passing away of Dr. N. Gopalakrishnan Ji. He was a multifaceted personality. He made notable contributions to science and academia. He was also respected for his rich spiritual knowledge and interest in Indian philosophy. Condolences to his family. Om Shanti.”
Gopalakrishnan worked as a scientist at the Advanced Seismic Testing and Research Laboratory (ASTaR) of CSIR-SERC, before assuming charge as Director, CSIRCBRI.
An MTech graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology, (IIT) Madras in Structural Engineering he obtained PhD from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.
He is widely recognized for his work in structural dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, Experimental methods in Structural Engineering, Machine supporting structure and soil-structure interaction, Reinforced concrete structures, Structural health monitoring, Smart materials, and structures.
He has five Indian patents to his credit and has co-authored 61 international and national journal publications.
