Scindia Kanya Vidyalaya: Impressive blend of novelty and heritage

SKV GwaliorSited in the heart of Gwalior, SKV’s picturesque 35-acre campus is set amidst immaculately landscaped lawns and seasonal flower beds and is home to diverse species of fauna. 

Spread over one lakh sq. ft., the school building houses classrooms equipped with Smart boards, a library hosting 17,000 books and  journal subscriptions and seven state-of-the-art science, geography, multimedia, home science and four well-equipped computer laboratories with 65 computers to enable experiential, hands-on learning. A newly installed weather station is used to log weather details which are used by NASA to record climate change. The campus also hosts a publishing department equipped with Apple PC’s and publication accessories.

The spacious Maharani Chinkoo Raje dining hall seats 450 students. Students are served five meals a day including refreshments during short break and tea after evening games. Students can make a choice of vegetarian or nonvegetarian diets and the menu includes Indian, Continental and Chinese cuisines. The students’ mess committee plays an important role in setting the menu for the week. The canteen/tuck shop caters to the adolescent taste-buds.

Kamla Bhawan named after Princess Kamla Raje Scindia is the oldest building in the heritage school campus. Built in the 1800’s, it serves as a guest house for international visitors.

The iconic clock tower was added to the façade in 2016 and was inaugurated on the 60th anniversary of the school by the then President of India Pranab Mukherjee. This building presently houses the administrative department of the school.

Maharaj Jivaji Rao Scindia Hall, the school auditorium with a seating capacity of 450, was inaugurated by the Sarood maestro Ustad Anjad Ali Khan in 1993. It has hosted innumerable inter-house and inter-school competitions. It also hosts the daily morning assemblies and movie screenings for the students.

In the tradition of the country’s vintage boarding schools, SKV provides excellent pastoral care to its 500 girl students who are housed in five well-maintained halls of residence with resident staff ensuring their physical and emotional well-being. A 24-bed hospital with a resident lady doctor and half a dozen nursing personnel are available 24/7 and all students and staff are medically insured.

Safety of the students is accorded high priority at SKV. The school has employed the services of lady-guards and security in-charges from Group Four Security (G4S) which is rated as the top security service worldwide. Over 230 CCTV cameras installed around the campus are continuously monitored and disaster management drills are conducted regularly.
