Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Member of Parliament, praised the Philosophy, Politics & Economics (PPE) program at O.P. Jindal Global University for combining a strong education in the humanities with career opportunities in areas like journalism, politics, entrepreneurship, activism, law, and academia. “PPE graduates have made significant contributions to the world, and this program offers the same potential for students,” he said at the launch of the four-year Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in PPE, starting in August 2025.
Tharoor, an author and former diplomat, also recognized JGU’s rapid rise as one of India’s leading universities. “A course like PPE is essential today, as we need young people who are not only skilled in science and technology but are also compassionate, well-rounded, and committed to humanist values,” he added. “This program will help students bridge the gap between these values and global challenges.”
The PPE program, first established in the UK in the 1920s, combines various disciplines to foster critical thinking. Tharoor noted that the program must continue to evolve in response to changes such as digital transformation and AI. “In today’s world, we need a more integrated understanding of global issues,” he said.
Professor C. Raj Kumar, Founding Vice Chancellor of JGU, explained how combining philosophy, politics, and economics can offer a better approach to understanding and addressing global issues. “This approach helps students develop the ability to engage in thoughtful discussions and resolve complex issues,” he said.
Professor Kathleen A. Modrowski, Dean of the Jindal School of Liberal Arts & Humanities, discussed the program’s focus on experiential and collaborative learning. “The future is unpredictable, and we must equip students to think critically and find innovative solutions. Our program encourages students to engage with real-world problems through community involvement and internships,” she said.
Professor R. Sudarshan, Dean of the Jindal School of Government & Public Policy, introduced the core principles of the program, emphasizing the importance of philosophy in developing critical thinking and ethical reasoning. “The PPE program encourages students to participate actively in public life and make informed decisions,” he said.
The event concluded with remarks from Professor Dabiru Sridhar Patnaik, O.P. Jindal Global University Registrar.
