Sherwood College, Nainital is a co-educational residential school affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE). It was founded in the year 1869 as the brainchild of Dr. Condon, Mr. H.S. Reid and others and under the patronage of the Rt. Rev. Robert Milman. Formerly known as the Diocesan Boys School, it was located at the Sherwood estate in the government house ground. It was shifted to its present site in 1897.
The School’s mission is to be a centre of excellence in education with the mission to educate their “privileged” youth in the essence of consecrated leadership and enlightened citizenship.
The school boasts of a large, sprawling 45-acre campus located on the Ayarpata hill that borders the Nainital Lake. The campus is an aesthetic blend of post-Edwardian style buildings embellished with Gothic patterned windows, Romanesque arches, oak-panelled walls, sturdy timber beams, quadrangles, and modern buildings.
Academic and co-curricular education facilities include smart boards in all the classes, state of the art science, computer and robotics labs, two auditoriums – the heritage 400-seat Millman Hall and state-of-the-art 900-seat Baston Centre, separate hostels for girls and boys and three dining halls.
The school offers infrastructure for outdoor and indoor games; cricket, football, hockey, swimming, athletics, basketball, lawn tennis, table tennis, volleyball, squash, badminton, chess, snooker, billiards, shooting, diving and gymnastics.
The art block houses the Indian and Western music departments on the ground floor. The first floor contains the art department comprising infrastructure housing the photography club, Hindi literary society and English literary society.
The school follows the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) curriculum; class X students appear for the ICSE board examinations and class XII students appear for the ISC board examinations. Students from classes III to XII are taught in this institution.
Two recent innovations have been the introduction of a computer literacy program for all students in classes VI to XII and the introduction of co-education at class III stage onwards.
