Somaiya Vidyavihar marked its 84th Foundation Day, highlighting new research initiatives, global academic collaborations and increased alumni involvement. The event featured Uday Kotak, Founder and Director of Kotak Mahindra Bank Limited, as Chief Guest.
Addressing students, Kotak urged the next generation to lead with “purpose, passion and paranoia,” while maintaining strong ethical boundaries. He noted the institution’s continuity across generations, shaped by the vision of founder K J Somaiya and the leadership of the Somaiya family.
President of Somaiya Vidyavihar and Chancellor of Somaiya Vidyavihar University, Samir Somaiya, reaffirmed the institution’s mission to expand access to education and develop socially responsible graduates. He cited alumni such as Akhil Kilawala, who works on on-device machine learning at Apple, and Dr Sarita Mali, a US-based scholar preparing to return as faculty, as examples of global contribution and continued engagement with the institution.
Navriti, the annual innovation showcase, featured student projects in engineering, applied sciences and school-level research. Exhibits included embedded AI-enabled microscopy, AI-based music learning tools, low-light image enhancement systems and social impact projects such as an anti-drug awareness gaming platform and portable water purification prototypes.
The ceremony also included awards recognising students, faculty and staff for achievements in academics, research, sports, community service and long-term service.
Entering its 85th year, Somaiya Vidyavihar stated its continued focus on research-driven learning, interdisciplinary collaboration and community-oriented education.
