Delhi Cabinet approved the Delhi Sports University Bill on Thursday, October 3, which will be set up in Mundka. The Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, both tweeted about the approval of the Bill and the location where it will be built.

Sisodia said that the new sports university will be set up on a 90 acre land in Mundka village in Delhi and the university’s Vice-Chancellor will also be from the sports fraternity. The students at the university will be awarded degrees based on their capability in the field of sports.

Meanwhile, Kejriwal tweeted the Delhi government has taken a historic decision for the youth today. and players will be able to get a degree on the potential of their sport. For the first time in the country, sports has been made part of mainstream higher education.

Addressing a press conference, Kejriwal said that his cabinet has approved the proposed Delhi Sports University (DSU) Bill. However, he clarified that since it is a finance bill, the file will have to be sent to the lieutenant governor for approval. The bill can be tabled in the winter session of the Delhi Assembly only after L-G Anil Baijal clears it.

The bill also grants the proposed university the right to establish constituent schools and colleges and it will identify and groom budding sporting talents at an early stage. Sisodia said that all the usual procedure including taking approvals from the University Grants Commission (UGC) will be followed. The objective, he added, is to facilitate and promote ‘sports’ studies and research in emerging areas of sports education with focus on liberal sports activities and science.
