St. Gerosa School Headmistress denies teacher’s religious offense

February 16, 2024

The headmistress of St. Gerosa English Higher Primary School in the city suggested that the recent controversy involving a teacher accused of making anti-Hindu remarks may have been orchestrated. She revealed alleged pressure from BJP MLA Vedavyas Kamath to terminate the teacher.

The headmistress, Sister Anitha, stated that the incident aimed to tarnish the school’s 60-year reputation for providing quality education at affordable fees. She clarified that Sr. Prabha, the accused teacher, was merely explaining a poem by Rabindranath Tagore in class, emphasizing that no derogatory remarks were made against any religion.

Sister Anitha mentioned the complaint received on February 10, assuring an inquiry. She disputed the viral audio message’s authenticity and sought protection due to fear of untoward incidents. The school lodged a police complaint against the audio’s propagation.

Education department officials and a subject expert visited on February 12, understanding the incident. MLA Vedavyas Kamath and Hindu activists staged a protest, pressuring the headmistress to terminate Sr. Prabha immediately. Forced to maintain law and order, Sister Anitha issued a statement removing the teacher.

She questioned whether the woman in the viral audio was genuinely a parent of a Gerosa student and asserted that the protest seemed staged to damage the school’s image. The school, maintaining a secular outlook, celebrates diverse festivals annually.
