St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai is a private autonomous university. Established in 1869, it offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Arts, Science, Commerce and Management. Named after Francis Xavier, the college located in South Mumbai is built in the Indo-Gothic architecture style and is recognized as a heritage structure.
St. Xavier’s Mumbai was the first college to be granted autonomy by the University of Mumbai in 2010. In 2006, St. Xavier’s was awarded the highest ‘A+’ grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). One of the leading private autonomous colleges of the country, St. Xavier’s Mumbai has been ranked among the top 20 private autonomous colleges in the country by EducationWorld India Autonomous Colleges Rankings 2020-21.
The St. Xavier’s Mumbai campus sprawls across 2.94 acres in South Mumbai. The main college library has a collection of over 1,20,000 volumes and two separate sections – the lending library that accommodates 42 readers and the reference library, located on top of the college hall which can accommodate 248 readers and has four internet terminals for accessing online databases and academic websites. The multimedia room is equipped with conventional audio-visual equipment, a multimedia computer and an LCD projector with a seating capacity of 120.
A special facility at the college campus is the Xavier’s Resource Centre for Visually Challenged (XRCVC) which is a state of the art support centre for visually challenged persons in the college. The centre is equipped with the latest technological innovations such as various screen readers, screen magnifiers, text to speech converters, Braille machines etc.
The counseling centre provides personal counseling and personality evaluation tests, testing programs for vocational purposes, information on careers, professions and specialized studies in India and abroad, information on scholarships and financial assistance scheme and orientation programs for freshers. The college has an administrators’ office that has administrators for campus maintenance, three in house carpenters, an electrician and other workers. The canteen is large and spacious and serves variety of refreshments and meals. The chapel is open during college hours for students and staff of all faiths.
The gymkhana provides body-building, badminton, table tennis, carom, chess and other recreational facilities for staff and students of the college. The services of the director and coach are available for guidance. The campus also has a basket ball court and a volleyball court.

The placement cell of St. Xavier’s Mumbai provides it students with academic, cultural and service-learning exposure, and helps them practice their creativity, analytical thinking and critical reflection, to be ready for professional life. The placement cell annually invites all recruiters to the campus for recruitment drives, pre-placement talks and student interactions and make lucrative offers to students.
Recent placement highlights- 2020: The median salary recorded during the 2020 placement drive for the arts, humanities and social sciences department was INR 3.60 LPA. This value was lower than the median CTC for the previous year (2019) which stood at INR 4.50 LPA.
Junior College Admission
St. Xavier’s Junior College is affiliated to the Mumbai Divisional Higher Secondary Board. Admissions to general category students are done through an online system of application mandated by the Maharashtra government. Applications of Catholic minority students who have reservation of 50% can be done directly at the college by filling in the forms, available soon after the SSC results are declared in Mumbai, usually during mid June.

The campus hostel has accommodation for only 60 male students of the senior college with facilities for study, recreation and common living. The college also has arrangements with a hostel at Seva Niketan, Byculla, to accommodate 30 male students of the senior college.
