Student groups, some tied to Indian parties, unite against NEP

November 22, 2023

Student organizations, some affiliated with the INDIA alliance, have joined forces as the ‘United Students of India’ to oppose the National Education Policy, 2020. They plan to stage a march to Parliament on January 12 next year, advocating for reforms that include free education.

Representatives from these groups, totaling around five crore students across 16 organizations, expressed opposition to the NEP. CVMP Ezhiarasan, secretary of the DMK’s student wing, criticized the policy, citing concerns about its commercialization, saffronization, and privatization, which contradict principles of social justice.

Their demands encompass free education from school to graduation and the establishment of a national employment guarantee Act. The planned ‘Parliament march’ in Delhi on January 12 and a subsequent rally in Chennai on February 1 aim to highlight these issues.

The coalition comprises various groups like AISA, AISB, AISF, CRJD, CYSS, DMK Student Wing, Dravidian Students’ Federation, NSUI, PSF, PSU, RLD Chatra Sabha, Samajwadi Chatra Sabha, Satro Mukti Sangram Samiti, SFI, and Tribal Students’ Union.

In their joint statement, they condemned the government’s actions, asserting that the attack on quality education contradicts the constitutional vision. They’ve adopted the slogan ‘Save Education, Reject NEP; Save India, Reject BJP‘, planning nationwide campaigns culminating in the Parliament March followed by a rally in Chennai.

Their demands extend to rights and opportunities for marginalized groups, including SC, ST, OBC, and the conduct of student union elections across campuses. Additionally, they’ve called upon like-minded student organizations to join the ‘United Students of India’ coalition.
